Time’s Arrow: The Island

My first family holiday to the Scottish Galloway coast was in 1977 when I was 9 years old. Ardwall Island lies off the coast line near the town of Gatehouse of Fleet. A roundish, tidal island that you can walk to a low tide. It is a feature of family holidays.

I have wanted to make a picture of the island for some time. The challenge was how to do this. I moved towards realising this ambition through experimenting with dyeing and building the picture in layers of embroidery.

The Island does not simply capture a place I visited in the past. It is also a place I hope to return to in the future. The direction of time’s arrow in The Island moves both from past into present through memory and is the future moving towards the present in the hope of return.
